book q&a

okay, so i've had this q&a saved for ages now, and i kept opening it up, answering one or two questions and then giving up. there are so many books in my life that i have loved, and own, and still want to read. i sat down today and decided to just go with it, giving simple answers with whatever came to mind first. i just know that i'll re-read this later and think "oh i should have mentioned so and so" but never mind!

what are you reading right now?
the woman in white by wilkie collins
the secret garden- frances hodgson burnett

do you have any idea what you’ll read when you’re done with that?
i’ve got tons on my to read list (you can find my goodreads page here) and i want to make a start on the books in the next question!

5 books have you always wanted to read but haven’t got round to?
to kill a mockingbird- harper lee
the bell jar- slyvia plath
the great gatsby- scott fitzgerald
the perks of being a wallflower- stephen chbosky
the help- kathryn stockett

what magazines do you have in your bathroom/lounge right now?
a really old “oh comely” and an issue of “style of wight” from my mum.

what’s the worst book you've ever read?
this question has puzzled me, because if i ever started reading a book & didn’t like it, i never went through to finish it! but i suppose there must have been some through alevels that i didn’t get on with.

what book seems really popular but you actually hated?
the girl with the dragon tattoo- stieg larsson; i only read a few chapters but i just couldn’t get into it.

what’s the one book you always recommend to just about everyone?
it’s so hard to name just one! i’m gonna go with three:
the book thief- markus zusak
never let me go- kazuo ishiguro
norwegian wood- haruki murakami

what are your 3 favourite poems?
i really don’t read enough poetry and can’t even think of three poems that i could call my favourite.

where do you usually get your books?
usually from a charity shop or the library- or i borrow them from people!

where do you usually read your books?
curled up on the sofa or in bed... sometimes when i travel, but i can never concentrate if it’s too noisy.

when you were little, did you have any particular reading habits?
i was obsessed with reading! my mum used to take my sister and me to the library once a week or fortnight, and i would literally borrow as many books as i could! i used to have a huge pile next to my bed- i devoured books :)

what’s the last thing you stayed up half the night reading because it was so good you couldn’t put it down?
i found the book thief really hard to put down and thought about it a lot, but over the last few weeks i’ve also read the hunger games trilogy which i read as quickly as i could because i hated not knowing the full story.

have you ever “faked” reading a book?
school books probably- i hated chaucer with a passion!

have you ever bought a book just because you liked the cover?
no, although i will always pick those ones up and have a read- if the synopsis sounded good too then i’d take the chance, but not solely based on the cover.

what was your favourite book when you were a child?
anything roald dahl and enid blyton- the naughtiest girl in the school.
when i was allowed to read from the “young adult” section i loved jacqueline wilson books and the confessions of georgia nicolson books!

what book changed your life?
i can’t think of a novel that changed my life, but the meaning of life- bradley trevor greive is an amazing little book, i’d recommend it to anyone!

what is your favourite passage from a book?
there are passages from tons of books that always stick out to me- i can always find something to relate to, but i chose this one because i think it’s one of the first passages from a book that has stuck with me since childhood.

“when people are insulting you, there is nothing so good for them as not to say a word -- just to look at them and think. when you will not fly into a passion people know you are stronger than they are, because you are strong enough to hold in your rage, and they are not, and they say stupid things they wished they hadn't said afterward. there's nothing so strong as rage, except what makes you hold it in -- that's stronger. it's a good thing not to answer your enemies.” a little princess- frances hudgson burnett.

what are your top five favourite authors?
haruki murakami
frances hudgson burnett
j.k. rowling
charles dickens
audrey niffenegger

what is your favourite classic book?
anything from grimm’s fairytales.

5 other notable mentions?
a little princess- frances hodgson burnett
harry potter- j.k. rowling (obviously!!)
when god was a rabbit- sarah winman
the time travelers wife- audrey niffenegger
the diving bell and the butterfly- jean dominique bauby

so there we have it! i'm really gotten back into reading over the last few months and basically can't read fast enough. i'd love to read other people's answers to these questions, the ones i have read are so interesting :)

so here she is, the cutest new addition to our lives.
we brought pixel home on friday evening, and i am totally and completely besotted with her. she is playful, curious, shy, and super affectionate. she seems to love all the toys that i made her and has already found her favourite spot under the sofa.

i had no idea how she would settle in, but so far she has been amazing. she already follows j everywhere and as soon as i get comfortable on the sofa, she cuddles up to join me. i'm really hoping that she carries on this way.

i have been taking so many photographs and videos of her (albeit only on my phone) and i'm trying not to post too many on twitter/instagram, but i can't help it!
i have a feeling that she might get her own little spot on the blog pretty soon :)

candy stripe nails

all about nails (by tesco) in "southseas" & topshop nail art pen in "frozen"

this nail varnish was a little present from my mum, it's such a perfect colour! i've been wearing it all week and think the stripes make it even better.

i have a few nail varnishes from this range now and the best thing is they are only £1! they are really good quality, i notice minimal chipping with them and they have some really lovely colours- it's a win win :)

knitted mice & all things nice

i haven't done an update post in ages, and thought it would be a good way to get my thoughts together and fill the blog/all of you lovely readers in on what i'm up to.

if you follow me on twitter or instagram, then you'll already know that last week, j and i went to look at some ragdoll kittens from a few local breeders. after a hugely stressful day and let downs, we ended up falling in love with a little female kitten who is a ragdoll cross breed, and i cannot tell you how excited i am to say that we are picking her up next week!
consequently i've spent all my free time since then making up little bits for her, including some little mice like the one above, and generally getting the flat kitten-proofed and ready. we have a name all picked out, but i'll save that for when i introduce her properly :)

on saturday, i went along to the brighton bloggers bash which was organised by alice. it was such an amazing afternoon, i met some really lovely people and it was great to finally see the awesome super+super headquarters!
it was my first time at a bloggers meet up, and despite being pretty nervous i had a great time; it's so much fun meeting like-minded people and everyone was genuinely lovely. actually having the chance to sit around chatting about blogging was really fun too, and it made me realise how much i love this community and all of the friends that i have gained because of it (n'awwh <3)
i also finally got to meet the gorgeous lauren who has written a post about the day, as have super+super over on their blog.

(for anyone in brighton, these photos were taken in snoopers paradise where they now have an old fashioned photo booth- it was so much fun!).

and finally, i've been brainstorming a new diy challenge for myself over the last few weeks and i'm almost ready to share it. it's something that i'm really excited about, and i'm trying to build it into a project that i can realistically work on in my spare time and with my minimal budget. i won't say any more for now, but i take publishing this paragraph as a little nudge for me to bring it all together!

one ingredient banana ice cream

i found this super simple recipe on this website last week when i was searching for ways to use up over-ripe bananas. i read it through a few times and still felt dubious; ice cream from just a few bananas, really?! however, all the comments said how great it was so i thought i'd give it a go.

you can click through to the website for the full instructions and some seriously yummy photos, but i thought i'd post a simple step-by-step too, just to show how easy it really is :)

i didn't have much in the cupboards to add to the ice cream afterwards, so i just opted for a few tablespoons of milk and then chocolate sprinkled on top. it was crazy how quickly it turned from lumpy bits of banana to an incredibly creamy mixture. i'm definitely making this again soon and i think i'm gonna have to try it with peanut butter- yum!

diy placemats

when i decided that i needed placemats a few weeks ago, i had one of those "oh gosh, i'm a proper adult" moments (seriously, when did this happen!?).
however, i decided to take on the challenge of diy'ing them and make the process a little more fun :)

they were really easy to make, and i decided to add button/loop fasteners to make them more compact; i'm not sure i've ever mentioned how miniscule my kitchen is, but every centimetre of storage space counts!
i think these are a slightly smaller size to a standard placemat, but they're just right for me and have been very successful at the dinner table! you might recognise the fabrics from the detachable pocket that i made for the shop, they're some of my favourites and i love how they look together.

if anyone would like a tutorial or pattern for these then let me know :)
(and p.s. it is okay to be excited by kitchen/home wares every now and then, right?)
